Scolecite is a tectosilicate mineral belonging to the zeolite group, characterized by its distinctive needle-like or fibrous crystal formations. Scolecite is a hydrated calcium silicate and is part of the zeolite group, specifically the Natrolite Subgroup.
It typically forms as a secondary mineral within cavities and fissures of basaltic rocks and other igneous formations, such as granite and gneiss, and is often found in low-temperature hydrothermal environment. Scolecite commonly appears as slender, acicular (needle-like) crystals that can form radiating or fibrous aggregates, often colorless to white, though rarely yellowish or orange. this scolecite does have three small baby scolecite sprays growing off the top of it.
