The specimen pictured was self collected in a Kentucky creek. It has been acid washed to bring out the fossils in the shale. This piece is highly UV reactive. This piece does contain several brachiopods, which are ancient marine invertebrates with clam-like shells composed of two halves.
The specimen is densely packed collection of fossil shells within a shale rock matrix.
Fossilization:
The process of fossilization can involve the replacement of organic material by minerals, such as calcite, over time.
Shale:
Shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock that can contain fossils.
Calcite Replacement:
In some instances, original organic material within a fossil can be replaced by calcite, a common mineral.
