Gembone is a rare fossil formed when the original organic material of a dinosaur bone is replaced by silica-rich minerals like agate, chalcedony, or jasper. This process, called permineralization, preserves the intricate, web-like internal cell patterns of the bone.
Key Characteristics
Formation: Most high-quality gembone is found in the Morrison Formation of the American West, particularly in Utah and Colorado.
Appearance: Its value is often determined by the intensity of its colors and the clarity of its cell structure. While earth tones like brown and tan are common, it can also appear in rare hues of red, blue, green, and yellow.
Uniqueness: Because each piece is formed by specific mineral-rich waters over millions of years, every gembone is one-of-a-kind.
