A polished pair of blue/gray botryoidal agatized coral geodes found in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. This material is also known as "Tampa Bay Coral" and is the official state stone of Florida. Formation: Agatized coral is a fossil formed when the original coral skeleton (calcium carbonate) is gradually replaced by silica-rich minerals, primarily chalcedony or agate, over millions of years. Age: These fossils are typically found in ancient seabeds and date back approximately 25 to 38 million years. Appearance: The transformation process preserves the intricate details of the ancient coral structures, which are visible in the white, textured areas of the specimens. The variety of colors, including shades of white, gray, brown, and yellow seen here, is due to different trace minerals present during the fossilization process. Geodes: Some of these fossils form as geodes, where the center is hollow and lined with botryoidal (grape-like clusters) or crystalline agate/chalcedony, as seen in the polished interiors of these pieces.
