While Searles Lake is the most famous source, Owens Lake (near Olancha, Inyo County, CA) also produces distinct Pink Halite specimens, often found growing on a base of yellow or white trona. Key Characteristics of Owens Lake Specimens Mineral Association: These are frequently "Halite on Trona" specimens, where pink, complexly-hoppered halite crystals cover a layer of trona. Fluorescence: Specimens from this locality often exhibit bright white fluorescence under both longwave and shortwave UV light, sometimes with a green afterglow. Formation: Like those from Searles Lake, these crystals form through the evaporation of highly saline water, with the pink hue caused by salt-loving bacteria. Rarity: They are considered relatively rare compared to Searles Lake material, as collecting at Owens Lake is often highly restricted. Care Note: Because this specimen is salt-based minerals, it is highly soluble in water and sensitive to humidity. It should be kept in dry environments to prevent it from dissolving or becoming brittle. Thos specimen is roughly 5.5x4.5 inches and weighs in at 13oz.
