The specimen pictured was self collected in the Mississippi River. It has been acid washed to bring out the fossils in the shale. This piece is highly UV reactive. The specimen is densely packed collection of fossil shells within a shale rock matrix. Fossilization: The process of fossilization can involve the replacement of organic material by minerals, such as calcite, over time. Shale: Shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock that can contain fossils.
