Summerville agate, primarily found at Patty's Chert Pit (also known as Patty's Quarry) in Summerville, Georgia, is a highly sought-after material for rockhounds. While often referred to as agate, it is technically a high-quality banded chert that formed in prehistoric cave-like voids, occasionally creating stalactite or stalagmite-like structures.
Key Characteristics of Patty's Pit Agate
Visual Patterns: Known for its intricate lace-like banding and brilliant "bullseye" or druzy quartz pockets.
Colors: Common varieties include "Patty Pink" lace agate and white clay-covered specimens. Some newer finds resemble "Paint Rock" with unique color mixes found just below the topsoil.
Vulnerability: The rough material often contains a light-colored, softer matrix that tumbles away quickly, leaving behind the harder, more beautiful banded stone.
