Natural pyramid calcite specimens are available as both naturally formed crystal clusters with a pyramidal shape (known as scalenohedrons or "dogtooth spar") and as hand-carved, polished decorative items made from raw calcite material. Calcite is a common mineral, found worldwide, that comes in many colors.
Characteristics of Natural Pyramid Calcite
Formation: Calcite is found abundantly in geological environments, often precipitating from water. Naturally occurring calcite crystals can form in various shapes, including rhombic and scalenohedral (pyramidal/pointy) forms, often in clusters. These "natural pyramid" specimens refer to the intrinsic crystal structure of the mineral itself.
Appearance: In its pure form, calcite is white or colorless, but impurities create a wide array of colors, including orange, blue, green, yellow, pink, and brown. Many specimens exhibit unique banding or translucence.
Physical Properties: Calcite is a relatively soft mineral, with a rating of 3 on the Mohs hardness scale. A key diagnostic property is that it will effervesce (bubble) when exposed to a dilute acid due to its carbonate composition.
